Some residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have taken to the streets to protest the tenure extension of six area councils’ chairmen and councillors.
The tenure of the affected chairmen and councillors had elapsed on Thursday and the newly-elected officials were supposed to have been sworn in on Friday, May 20, 2022.
However, the FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello, while citing a court judgement, extended the officials’ tenure by one year.
Residents of the Gwagwalada Area Council who were displeased by this took to the streets to protest.
The residents, who barricaded the roads and made bonfires, demanded a reversal of the decision.
This obstructed vehicular movements in the area.
