Sultan’s media team: Viral protest video at Palace is old, misleading

The media team of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, says a video circulating online showing protesters at the palace is outdated and being recirculated to mislead the public.

Aminu Haliru Gidadawa, speaking for the team on Sunday, said the footage shows individuals gathered outside the palace with leaves.

“That video is not recent. It dates back to 2024 during nationwide protests over rising food costs and economic hardship. It is now being deliberately shared out of context to create a false impression,” Gidadawa said.

He stated there is no crisis or unrest involving the Sultan and his subjects, and urged Nigerians to disregard claims of a breakdown in relations.

“For the avoidance of doubt: the palace and surrounding areas remain calm and peaceful. There are currently no protests, disturbances, or security concerns in or around the palace,” he said.

Gidadawa added that the Sultan’s position on hardship has not changed.

He said the monarch has consistently raised concerns about economic conditions and continues to advocate for policies to improve citizens’ welfare.

The team warned against politicizing the Sultanate through outdated, politically motivated content, and urged the public to verify information before sharing it online.
