Nigeria’s political space is steadily heating up as early permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to take firmer shape, with the National Assembly emerging as a central arena of strategic calculation. What is playing out is not just routine pre-election alignment, but a deliberate and high-stakes effort to influence the structure, leadership, and stability of the next legislature.

In a bid to restore integrity and professionalism to the National Assembly, stakeholders and concerned staff members have called on the new National Assembly Service Commission to prioritise competence, capacity and seniority over ethnic or zonal interests in key appointments.

The stakeholders emphasised that the National Assembly, as the bastion of Nigeria’s democracy, must be shielded from the menace of ethnicity and other forms of nepotism in the appointment of top officials, particularly the Clerks of the Senate and House of Representatives.

According to the stakeholders, the Clerk position requires a “thoroughbred legislative officer” with exceptional legislative skills, technical know-how and a deep understanding of floor management and administration.

They stressed that the ideal candidate should possess the ability to discern the political temperature in the chamber, read the body language and mood of the presiding officer and members, and provide expert guidance and direction to lawmakers.

The stakeholders also warned against the missteps of the former commission, urging the new commission to learn from past experiences and ensure that merit, rather than ethnicity or zonal interests, guides its appointment decisions.

● Key qualifications for clerk position:

– Legislative expertise: A deep understanding of legislative processes and procedures
– Technical know-how: Proficiency in administrative and technical aspects of legislative work
– Floor management: Ability to manage the chamber’s proceedings and maintain order
– Political acumen: Ability to discern the political temperature and navigate complex situations
– Leadership: Ability to guide, direct and lead lawmakers effectively

The stakeholders’ call to action underscores the need for a more professional and merit-based approach to appointments in the National Assembly, ensuring that the institution remains a beacon of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.
