Staff members of the National Assembly [NASS] are now very concerned about the way and manner security agents openly hoist their weapons [pistols] either on their lower backwaists or hips in and around the premises of the NASS complex.
The practice, which a staff member said was more rampant in the lobby of the White House, offends the atmospherics and nuances of democracy and civil rule that the legislature exemplifies.
The “open display” of weapons, they pointed out, is a constant reminder of rulership by the gun.
Besides, they argued that it instilled fear of possible accidental discharges that could prove fatal.
A staff member reasoned: “it is a threat to the institution, lawmakers, staff members and visitors, particularly, under age pupils who frequent the complex for excursions and other engagements.”
THE CONCLAVE understands that only the aides-de-camp to the presiding officers are permitted to carry firearms and other arms considering the sensitive positions of their principals.
Even at that, this news medium further understands that there’s an armoury, which is specifically designed for such firearms and ammunition to be kept, away from public view.
But our correspondent reports that what is rampant in the lobby is “a flagrant and arrogant display of firearms without any regards to the provision of the armoury, by personnel of security agencies.”
A senior staff member expressed fears and concerns about the open display by security agents of their firearms, asking “what happens in the case of provocation, what about accidental discharges and other eventualities that could endanger life and property?”
He said that the earlier the management of the national assembly takes this issue seriously by engaging the leadership of the security agencies on the issue, the better.
“People’s lives should not be endangered by possible negligence. Management and leadership of security agencies must get the security officers to obey directives that enhance democratic practices, including not hoisting, any longer, guns either on lower backwaists or hips.”
