Special Adviser to UN Secretary-General, Obi of Onitsha meet

The Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, has received in audience the United Nations Under-Secretary-General/ Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Ms. Alice Wairimu Nderitu, who led a UN team, including the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Matthias Schmale, to engage with the monarch.

Speaking during the meeting, Wairimu Nderitu said her mandate and mission in Nigeria was to prevent atrocity, crimes, and all its triggers.

“I am not here because genocide has happened in Nigeria. My mandate and mission in Nigeria is to prevent atrocity, crimes, and all its triggers.” Said Nderitu.

She noted that Nigeria, like many other countries, had fault lines that could be triggered by elections.

“What we do is to nip it in the bud.” She added.

In his response, the Obi of Onitsha informed that all traditional rulers in the South-East had been mobilised to take charge of their communities for peace and ensure that there were no infiltrators into their communities.
