The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has arrested a man for allegedly mixing various brands of fertiliser in Chinade village, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
Mr Murtala Saad, the State Coordinator, SON, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Tuesday.
He said the suspect, Mr Ibrahim Chinade, was arrested at Chinade for allegedly mixing fertiliser of different brands in one bag and selling it to farmers.
“We got a hint that someone is selling unwholesome fertiliser mixture and moved to arrest the suspect.
“The suspect was arrested for mixing indorama, Mairago, freedom Bunkarsar gonna and rebranding them into Golden Fertiliser bags before selling to farmers.
“We warn farmers against buying fertiliser in the open markets, urging them to consult market leaders or professionals because of the dangers involved,” he said.
Saad said that Chinade confessed to his crime but claimed that it was not an offence.
He added that the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution.
The coordinator, however, reiterated the commitment of SON to fighting against unscrupulous elements who persisted in defrauding citizens through dubious acts.
He gave the assurance that the organisation would continue to intensify efforts to apprehend criminals perpetrating such acts through discreet information gathering.
Saad advised fertiliser dealers to always do the right thing by selling the right products to consumers and farmers.
He also urged the general public to provide useful information to support the battle against substandard products and unwholesome practice to SON, to curb the menace.(NAN)
