In a commendable move towards enhancing educational opportunities for indigent female students, the Education Sub-Committee of the Senators’ Wives Association of Nigeria (SEWAN) has recently granted scholarships to 18 deserving students at the University of Abuja (UofA).

The scholarships, aimed at supporting the beneficiaries until their graduation, were formally announced by Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, the wife of the Senate President.

Representing Mrs. Akpabio during the ceremony was Hajia Laila Barau Jibrin, the wife of the Deputy Senate President. Mrs. Jibrin highlighted that the scholarships would cover the entire tuition fees of the recipients, providing a substantial financial relief to facilitate their academic pursuits.

Additionally, each student will receive an annual stipend of N150,000, further easing the financial burden associated with pursuing higher education.

In a thoughtful gesture, SEWAN presented a laptop to each of the 18 students, recognizing the essential role of technology in modern education.

This initiative aims to empower the recipients with the necessary tools to excel academically and stay connected in an increasingly digitalized world.

Professor Janet Plang, the Chairperson of the sub-committee responsible for this initiative, expressed SEWAN’s unwavering commitment to bridging gender gaps and fostering the improvement of girl-child education across Nigeria.

Professor Plang emphasized that such initiatives play a pivotal role in creating a conducive environment for the holistic development of female students.

The Senators’ Wives Association of Nigeria continues to demonstrate its dedication to philanthropy and social development, with this scholarship program representing a noteworthy stride towards a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape.

The association’s commitment to uplifting the educational aspirations of young women aligns with broader efforts to create a society that values and supports the educational empowerment of all its members.
