Former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Rowland Owie, has expressed deep sorrow over Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s passing, describing him as a mentor, leader, and guiding force in Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
Owievsaid that Nigeria had lost a towering statesman, a fearless advocate for democracy, justice, and national unity.
He said Adebanjo’s death marked the end of an era, leaving a profound impact on the nation’s political and social landscape.
“Pa Adebanjo was not just a political leader; he was a moral compass for our nation. His unwavering commitment to justice and democracy shaped Nigeria’s progress in immeasurable ways,” Owie stated.
He said: “A veteran nationalist, Adebanjo was instrumental in Nigeria’s independence movement and later became a key figure in shaping the country’s political direction.
“As a leading voice in the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) under Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he championed progressive policies focused on education, economic empowerment, and social welfare.
“His defiance against authoritarian rule was resolute. As a founding member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), he played a pivotal role in restoring civilian governance, often at great personal risk. Even in his later years, Adebanjo remained a vocal advocate for good governance, restructuring, and national unity.
“Baba Adebanjo’s wisdom, clarity, and patriotic fervor never waned. He consistently held leaders accountable and fought for a just and equitable Nigeria.”
He continued: “Adebanjo’s passing is an immense loss, but his legacy of justice, equity, and democracy will continue to inspire future generations.”
Senator Owie extended his deepest condolences to Adebanjo’s family, Afenifere, the people of Ogun State, and all Nigerians who share his vision of a just and united nation.
