Senator Anyim launches Pius Anyim Mentorship Programme to build Nigeria’s next generation of ethical leaders

● Applications open for inaugural 2026 cohort of 30 fellows. Programme to be fully funded, non-partisan

Former President of the Senate and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, has launched a nationwide leadership fellowship aimed at deliberately grooming Nigeria’s next generation of ethical leaders for public service, business and academia.

The initiative, branded the Pius Anyim Mentorship Programme (PAM-P), opened applications this week for its inaugural 2026 institutional cohort. Between 25 and 30 fellows will be selected through a competitive national process.

Anyim said the programme was born out of a conviction that Nigeria’s biggest deficit is not talent, but preparation.

“Talent alone is insufficient. Leadership is not acquired by chance — it is built through experience,” Anyim said at the launch.

“The purpose of PAM-P is to prepare young Nigerians before opportunity arrives. When responsibility comes, preparation should already be in place.”

—Bridging the gap between degrees and duty—

According to the organisers, PAM-P is designed to bridge the longstanding gap between academic excellence and the practical, moral demands of leadership.

Drawing from more than three decades in public service, Anyim said his time as Senate President and SGF showed him that institutions survive on judgement, not just brilliance.

“In public life, I have seen that talent alone does not prepare people for responsibility. Leadership requires judgement, discipline, respect for institutions, and the courage to serve beyond personal ambition. PAM-P is my modest contribution to preparing a new generation of Nigerians for responsible leadership,” he said.

The fellowship builds on an earlier mentorship effort Anyim started in 2019. The new version is now fully institutionalised with a structured curriculum, competitive selection, and long-term mentorship.

—How the 8–12 week fellowship works—

PAM-P will run in three phases:

1. Online Leadership Academy – 8 weeks: Fellows will be trained virtually in ethical leadership, governance, entrepreneurship, strategic thinking, negotiation, career development and institutional leadership.
2. Residential Leadership Immersion – Abuja: Selected participants will converge in Abuja for simulations, case studies, peer learning and direct engagement with leaders from the public and private sectors.
3. Post-Programme Mentorship: Graduates will enter a continuous mentorship and networking track to support career progression.

Fellows will also be streamed into one of three pathways:
1. Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development
2. Public and Private Sector Leadership
3. Academia and Advanced Studies

—Who can apply and how—

Applications are open to:
– Recent graduates and current NYSC members
– Early-career professionals within 5 years of graduation
– Entrepreneurs and civic/community leaders with proven track record

Organisers say academic certificates will not be the primary yardstick.

“The Programme prioritises formation potential over polished credentials. A promising applicant from a modest background who has shown genuine leadership in their community is of greater interest than a well-credentialled candidate who has not,” the organisers stated.

In a major departure from many elite programmes, PAM-P will be completely free. Successful applicants will have transportation to Abuja, accommodation, feeding and all training materials fully covered during the residential phase.

The fellowship is described as non-partisan and open to Nigerians across political, ethnic and religious lines.

The programme is coordinated by the Senator Anyim Pius Anyim Service Library Ltd/GTE, with implementation support from the Athena Institute of Business and Technology, and academic and residential partnership with Baze University.

With PAM-P, Anyim is betting that Nigeria’s future will be decided not by who shouts loudest, but by who is prepared to serve best.
