In the ongoing Operation WHIRL PUNCH (OPWP), Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft have persistently targeted and dismantled terrorist infrastructure, particularly in the Northwest and North Central regions of Nigeria. A notable success in this endeavor occurred on March 15, 2024, when NAF airstrikes effectively obliterated a terrorist logistics storage facility located in Palele near Shiroro, Niger State.
The Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, confirmed the operation’s success.
Acting on credible intelligence pointing to the presence of a cache of weapons belonging to terrorists east of Palele, authorization was swiftly granted to deploy air assets to neutralize the imminent threat.
The operation, characterized by swiftness and precision, inflicted significant damage upon the target area, with a secondary explosion verifying the destruction of arms and ammunition.
These weapons were believed to be associated with a notorious terrorist kingpin listed as one of the Most Wanted.
The strikes undoubtedly weakened the operational capabilities of terrorist factions, particularly those poised to launch attacks on innocent civilians, notably in Kaduna and Niger States.
Air Vice Marshal Gabkwet emphasized that the NAF, in collaboration with ground forces, remains committed to asserting control over areas of concern through heightened situational awareness, continuous patrols, and targeted strikes on terrorist hideouts.
He underscored the pivotal role of public support and information in the ongoing counterterrorism efforts, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in reporting suspicious activities perpetrated by terrorist and criminal elements.
