SECURITY ALERT IN FCT AND THE REST OF US, By Loverty Terr. Makyur Jnr.

It’s no news that there are heightened concerns about the security situation in Abuja with the US and other foreign missions warning their citizens against unnecessary exposures to public places in the FCT with reports of some major shopping malls shutting down in order to forestall attacks.

In all these, there have been arguments and counter arguments by FCT residents as to whether the authorities in the territory and the security heads are doing enough or otherwise. Questions are being asked by concerned citizens whether there are some information that government is not telling them to which some diehard security experts would explain “that certain security information are better shared on need-to-know basis” as exposing too much to the public may itself lead to security lapses and by extension counter productive or outright failure.

I use this medium to ask once again: is the FCT administration under the current minister doing enough? Take for instance the state of darkness on the streets of Abuja and the major roads at night viz-a-viz the influx of bikes in the city centre including Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse 2, Mabushi, Gwarimpa, Guzape, Apo, Gudu, etc. We all witnessed the sterling leadership the current governor of Kaduna state Nasir el-Rufai bequeathed the FCT. So what’s really difficult for the current leadership to tap from Mr el-Rufai’s wisdom more so that he’s just a few kilometres away?

In the absence of clear leadership, what then is the appointing authority expected to do?

Lest I forget, heads of the security agencies, officers and men are doing a tremendous job, no doubt, and they need our total support in order to keep us safe as security is everybody’s responsibility.
I therefore challenge us to take our security seriously by knowing our neighbours and reporting suspicious behaviours/persons to the relevant security agencies as information is key to the success of good over evil.
Though we’re in an election/electioneering season, we must rise against partisanship to defend and defeat this monster staring us in the face in order to build a strong nation as there cannot be meaningful social-economic development amid insecurity.

Our unity and loyalty to fatherland are under threat by traitors within and outside that we must rise up against “so help us God”, borrowing from the last words of our national pledge.
