A Nigerian reverend sister and medical doctor, Sr. Gina King, has reacted to the online criticism she received after her birthday photos on a pair of trousers, went viral.

Her photos sparked mixed reactions across social media platforms, with many questioning why a consecrated sister would appear in a pair of trousers, an outfit not associated with the traditional of members of religious orders.

Addressing the controversy in a Facebook post, Sr. Gina explained that what she wore was not a fashion statement but medical scrubs, the standard uniform required for healthcare professionals.

She wrote that being a consecrated person did not prevent her from fulfilling her duties as a medical doctor, and her attire was strictly for hygiene, comfort, and safety while attending to patients.

“In the hospital, we are required to dress in a way that allows free movement, proper coverage, comfort, and safety,” she said, adding that scrubs were a functional necessity, not an attempt at abandoning modest dressing.

Sr. Gina clarified that members of her institute, known as Seculars, were expected to dress modestly and responsibly, just like any person committed to serving God and humanity.

She also reminded critics that “reverend sisters serve in different capacities: some in classrooms, others in administration, charity work, and many, like herself, in healthcare.

“So please, let us focus on the heart of service rather than the external attire.” [GWG excluding rejigged headline]
