Sundry media reports in the last twenty-four hours have said that that the Central Bank of Nigeria has unofficially confirmed that both old N1000, N500 and new notes are now legal tenders.
The Acting Director of Corporate Communications CBN, Dr Isa Abdulmumin, was reported to have disclosed this on Tuesday.
He reportedly affirmed that commercial banks had started issuing both the old and new notes to their customers, but insisted that the apex bank had yet to issue an official statement in that regard.
One of the reports quoted him to have said: “Banks are paying old notes as well as new notes. They are all legal tender.
“Yes, the CBN has not issued an official statement on the issue. Anyone banks give to you, you can collect. We just want to make life easy for Nigerians.”
The development came on the heels of the Supreme Court ruling on March 3, 2023, directing the federal government to allow the validity of the old N200, N500 and N1000 notes till 31 December, 2023.
