President Bassirou Faye of Senegal has dissolved the National Assembly and scheduled new legislative elections for November 17.

President Faye announced the decision to dissolve the National Assembly in a message he sent to the nation on Thursday.

He said: “After consulting the Constitutional Council on the right date, the prime minister and the president of the National Assembly on the appropriateness, I dissolve the National Assembly.

“And I announce that the legislative elections holds on November 17.”

In spite of winning the presidential election with 54.28 per cent of the vote in March, his party, the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity, holds the minority position in the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the coalition of the outgoing President Macky Sall controlled the majority of the 165 seats.
