Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue the Oyo State governorship, citing provisions of the Electoral Act barring political appointees from contesting elections while in office.
In a letter dated April 22, 2026, to the President, Adelabu said his resignation takes effect April 30 to allow a seamless transition in the ministry. The letter was routed through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Adelabu thanked Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, calling it a privilege to contribute to power sector reforms. He described the sector as vital to Nigeria’s economic growth and industrial development.
He said the decision was driven by his plan to “concentrate fully” on the Oyo governorship race. The amended Electoral Act requires appointees to resign before contesting.
Adelabu noted his governorship ambition dates to 2016 while he was Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, a bid that prompted his exit from the CBN in 2018.

His resignation reshapes Oyo politics ahead of the next election cycle and opens a vacancy in Tinubu’s cabinet less than three years into the administration.
