In a recent press release, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has raised concerns over the escalating trend of self-kidnapping, emphasizing that such acts are punishable offenses under the law.

The warning comes in the wake of multiple incidents across various locations, leading to the apprehension of suspects in Lagos, Plateau, and Abuja.

In Lagos, a couple, Doubara David Yabrifa, a 53-year-old technician, and Regina Yabrifa, a 48-year-old body massager and bone setter, were arrested for allegedly orchestrating a self-kidnapping scheme.

The motive behind the elaborate plan was to secure a N5 million ransom, with the couple confessing to the intention of using the funds to purchase property in Badagry, Lagos.

The husband cited financial difficulties and lack of support from relatives as justifications for their actions.

Both suspects have been arrested and subsequently charged in court.

Additionally, Albarka Sukuya of Jenta Apata, Jos, has gained notoriety for staging multiple self-kidnappings, extracting ransoms from unsuspecting members of the Plateau State community.

Similarly, on January 20, 2024, Nnamdi Agu attempted to defraud a family member in Abuja by faking his own kidnapping to fund personal pleasures.

Prompt police intervention foiled the staged kidnapping, leading to Agu’s arrest.

These cases are indicative of a troubling trend where individuals exploit the prevalence of kidnapping incidents for personal gain.

The NPF urges the public to exercise caution and be vigilant against this emerging trend.

Individuals contemplating engaging in such criminal activities are sternly warned to desist, as the police will spare no effort in ensuring that suspects face the full legal consequences of their actions.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, emphasizes the need for media outlets, social media influencers, and bloggers to verify information thoroughly before disseminating it.

This precaution is crucial to preventing panic and safeguarding the nation’s security arrangements.

The NPF reassured the public of its commitment to addressing and curbing this disturbing trend, urging citizens to collaborate in maintaining law and order while emphasizing that legal consequences await those who choose to engage in self-kidnapping.
