In an official statement released on Wednesday, the Imo State Police Command clarified the circumstances surrounding the detention of Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in Owerri.

According to the statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police for Imo State Command, ASP Okoye Henry, Comrade Joe Ajaero had arrived in Owerri as part of the NLC’s preparations for a large-scale protest rally in the state.

He said during the planning process, discussions arose about potentially locking down essential facilities, notably the airport, which led to resistance from some workers and individuals, resulting in heated disputes and, eventually, an assault on Comrade Joe Ajaero by a mob.

ASP Okoye Henry said that upon receiving the report of the incident, the Imo Police Command swiftly dispatched officers to the scene.

He said the officer in charge exercised operational discretion by placing the NLC President under protective custody at the State Command Headquarters.

This measure, he said, aimed to ensure the safety of his life, prevent any potential harm during the scuffle that ensued.

Following this, the Commissioner of Police directed that Comrade Joe Ajaero should receive necessary medical attention due to the injuries sustained in the attack.

“He has since been provided with adequate security to continue with his legitimate activities for the day,” he said.

“The Imo State Police Command emphasizes the existence of a court injunction from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Owerri, dated October 27, 2023, with Suit No. NICN/OW/41/2023.

“This injunction specifically bars the NLC from conducting the planned protest rally in Owerri.

“Commissioner of Police for Imo State, CP Mohammed Ahmed Barde, psc (+), urges all concerned parties to abide by the court’s directives. Compliance is vital to avoid jeopardizing the current security measures in Owerri and other parts of Imo State, especially as the state prepares for upcoming electoral activities on November 11, 2023,” he stated.
