Police arrest two for fake Tinubu audio, Abuja security panic post

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested two suspects linked to separate cases of false information, including a fabricated audio recording purportedly featuring President Bola Tinubu and a social media post that allegedly spread fear over security in Abuja.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga announced the arrests Thursday, June 4, 2026, saying the police crack team was cracking down on purveyors of misinformation.

—Fake Tinubu voice traced to Benin—

Onanuga disclosed that operatives from the Inspector-General of Police’s crack team apprehended Ifechukwu Dennis in Benin City, Edo State, for allegedly creating and circulating the fake voice recording.

“The IGP crack team has arrested Ifechukwu Dennis who originated the fake voice that he passed on to his gullible targets as President Tinubu’s voice. Dennis was arrested in Benin. The police will issue an official statement,” Onanuga wrote on X.

According to the presidential spokesperson, the suspect used the fabricated audio to deceive Nigerians.

–Second suspect arrested for Abuja panic post–

Onanuga also revealed that police arrested another Nigerian accused of publishing a social media post that raised alarm over security in Abuja. He said the post contributed to public panic and misinformation.

He stressed that security agencies remain committed to tackling false content capable of undermining public confidence and order.

“By arresting him, the police have sent the clear message that reckless users of the social media won’t go scot free,” Onanuga stated.

Police said they will issue an official statement with further details of both investigations.
