The Oyo State Police Command has arrested Islamic cleric Jamiu Adegunwa for allegations of defamatory publications targeting Mallam Yusuf Adepoju, President of the Academy of Islamic Propagation.
Adegunwa was apprehended in Ibadan after he reportedly failed to appear before the Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, in connection with the case, charge No. FHC/OS/86C/2025.

According to prosecution counsel J. Oyetunji, the cleric is accused of publishing defamatory content against Adepoju, the Academy of Islamic Propagation, and members of the complainant’s family via a social media platform identified as Al-Madrasatu Wahabiya.

The prosecution alleged the publications were made between July 2021 and the present and subjected the complainant to ridicule, hostility and reputational damage. Authorities said the offence contravenes Sections 24(1)(a) and (b), and Section 24(2)(a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.

The court heard that Adegunwa had previously filed a N500 million suit against the Inspector-General of Police and a former Assistant Inspector-General, Zone 11, at the Federal High Court in Lagos. Prosecution said the court ruled in favour of the police in that matter, and subsequent judicial orders paved the way for his arrest.
Adegunwa is facing a one-count charge bordering on alleged defamatory publication. He has not entered a plea in open court as of press time.
The case is ongoing before Justice of the Federal High Court, Osogbo. Adegunwa’s legal team has not issued a public statement.
