Speaker Gabriel Dewan of the Plateau State House of Assembly reportedly administered the oath of office on nine out of the 16 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers-elect in the state.
The swearing-in ceremony took place in the early hours of Friday.
The sixteen lawmakers-elect had secured victories at the Court of Appeal against their rivals from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but faced delays in being sworn in due to court injunctions.
Following the appellate court’s decision, which nullified the election of the PDP lawmakers and declared the APC candidates as winners of the March 18, 2023 election in their constituencies, the swearing-in ceremony proceeded.
The Court of Appeal’s ruling also led to the removal of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, citing improper nomination of other PDP candidates for the elections.
However, the Supreme Court overturned the governor’s removal on January 12, 2024.
Despite the Supreme Court’s decision, the 16 PDP members sought to claim their seats in the state assembly, citing the judgement in the governorship dispute.
The seats remained vacant until Friday, when the house swore in the nine APC lawmakers, marking a significant development in the state’s political landscape.
