The cargo plane was diverted to East Midlands Airport and landed around an hour later.

A squawking code, 7700, can mean a number of things, from an onboard medical emergency to mechanical issues or any other general emergency that isn’t a hijacking or loss of communication.

Flight monitoring website Flightradar 24 said: “Currently #1 is this Boeing 747 freighter, operating a positioning flight from Cardiff to Zaragoza and squawking 7700.”

A spokesperson for East Midlands Airport said: “We can confirm that a 747 aircraft operated by cargo airline One Air diverted to East Midlands Airport today after suffering failure in one engine shortly after taking off from Cardiff. It landed safely and will remain here for repairs to take place.”
