Peter Obi storms NDC eadquarters for Presidential Screening ahead of 2027 election

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi arrived at the national secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja on Tuesday evening for the party’s presidential screening ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi, dressed in his trademark all-black kaftan and cap, entered the premises at about 6:45 p.m., about 20 minutes after screening committee chairman Senator Sam Egwu arrived. He handed over his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to an aide and was accompanied by Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central.

The development follows days of speculation that Obi is the favourite to emerge as the NDC’s consensus presidential candidate. The party recently suspended the sale of presidential nomination forms while continuing sales for governorship, Senate and House of Representatives forms, fueling the reports. Both the party leadership and Obi’s camp have denied any formal arrangement.

The NDC on Tuesday inaugurated a 17-member screening committee chaired by Egwu, former governor of Ebonyi State and ex-lawmaker. The committee will screen aspirants for presidential, governorship, senatorial and House of Representatives positions.

According to a statement by National Secretary Barrister Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the panel was inaugurated at 4 p.m. and includes Buba Galadima, Ikeddy Isiguzo, Wole Adedayo, Udenta Udenta, Henry Obaze, and other party leaders and professionals. The party’s National Legal Adviser, Reuben Egwuaba, will serve as secretary.
