Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains strong and resilient despite speculation about its future.

Jonathan said the PDP continues to play a central role in Nigeria’s democracy and remains the only surviving original political party formed in 1998.

He spoke on Tuesday during a meeting with members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by National Chairman, Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), at his office in Abuja. The talks centred on reconciliation efforts and strategies to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Jonathan noted that the PDP has the capacity to overcome its internal challenges, describing it as an institution that has shaped national politics. He recalled his own rise through the party, from deputy governor to president, saying he remains grateful and committed to supporting it.

He urged party leaders to prioritise national interest and institutional growth over personal ambitions, stressing that strong political parties are vital to democratic stability.

Earlier, Turaki thanked Jonathan for his guidance and reaffirmed the leadership’s commitment to a “Rebirth Agenda” aimed at rebuilding unity and restoring the PDP as a major political force.

The delegation included Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Prof. Jerry Gana, Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (rtd), Hajiya Zainab Maina, Chief Mike Oghiadome, Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), and other NWC members.
