A group within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), known as the Global Ambassadors in collaboration with the PDP National Coordinators’ Forum, has called on the leadership of the party to zone national chairman’s position to the Southwest or Southeast for political expediency.
The group also demanded the resignation of the national chairman of the party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu.
In a statement on Sunday in Abuja and signed by the National Coordinator, Amb. Piegbe, Emmanuel Uebari, the group called on the PDP Governors, Board of Trustees (BoT), National Executive Committee (NEC), National Assembly (NASS) caucus and all critical stakeholders of the party, to beam party’s searchlight on the Southwest geo-political zone, to produce the new PDP national chairman to deplete and divide the votes of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate in South West considered as his stronghold, ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
The group said that alternatively, the chairmanship should go to the Southeast zone, to divide the votes of the Labour Party presidential candidate, which is also considered as his stronghold.
“After the 2021 October 30th/31st PDP National Convention and the build up to the 2022 PDP presidential primary election, the PDP Global Ambassadors World-Wide, in collaboration with the PDP National Coordinator’s Forum kick started a nationwide consultation and sensitization to strongly advocate that the 2023 PDP presidential ticket, be thrown open to both Northern and Southern aspirants, as an opposition party, with a rider, that if a Northerner emerged, the PDP National Chairmanship, will automatic be swapped to South, vis-à-vis. We salute the courage and determination of our great party national leadership and all critical national stakeholders, who stood by the strategic agreement.
“There was healthy competition or contest in our great party, there was rejuvenation and revival in the party nationwide. Over 10 presidential aspirants went round the 36 States & FCT, and delegates smiled to the bank.
“While we await the resignation letter of His Excellency, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, to pave way for the emergence of a new PDP National Chairman, from the Southern Nigeria, precisely SOUTH-WEST OR SOUTH EAST.
“It is no longer news, that Ayu Must Go. The South has sacrificed so much, both in building and sustaining the party and also conceding the Southern turn for expediency, as an opposition party. The PDP presidential ticket ceded to the North is to ensure we win the 2023 presidential election. People should be ready to sacrifice their personal interest, for the party’s interest, which is supreme.”
According to the statement, “consensus is killing our great party. It does not allow for healthy competition or healthy contest in the party. Consensus is undemocratic. Never again, in the PDP, shall we allow a single man as consensus candidate, for the office of the PDP National Chairman. We must allow 1,2,3,4 aspirants to vehemently contest. Healthy competition, spend their own hard earned money, consult and travel round the 36 States and FCT. So that, when they win and sworn into office, they will understand the value of critical party national stakeholders.
“PDP Power To the People!”
