A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Humphrey Abah, has lambasted party members who defected to other parties, saying they are being treated like strangers and viewed with suspicion.
Abah expressed disappointment that prominent PDP figures, who once held key positions in the party, abandoned ship over petty squabbles and power struggles.
Abah noted that many of the party’s defectors were once high-ranking members of the PDP, having served as Vice President, Senate President, Speakers, Ministers, and legislators.
“However, due to little differences, power play, and distribution, they became disgruntled and left the party,” he said.
Abah lamented that this trend reflected poorly on the democratic experience, emphasising that politicians should prioritise service, commitment, loyalty, and resilience over personal ambition.
Despite the defections, Abah said he remained optimistic about the PDP’s prospects, citing its strong foundation and experienced politicians.
He urged his friends and fellow PDP members who defected to return to the party, saying, “The PDP is where they belong.”
Abah called on them to join forces to rebuild a more determined and resilient party that can reclaim its prominence in Nigerian politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abah’s comments serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by politicians who defect from their parties.
As the 2027 general elections approach, the PDP is likely to intensify efforts to woo back defectors and rebuild its strength.
