A fire outbreak on Monday disrupted activities at the oncology department of the National Hospital Abuja, forcing the emergency evacuation of patients and medical personnel.
The incident, reportedly caused by an electrical fault, was brought under control before it could spread to other parts of the hospital.
Patients receiving treatment at the oncology unit, including those undergoing chemotherapy and emergency care, were immediately moved to safer sections within the facility.
Witnesses said the incident followed repeated power fluctuations in the department. Electricity supply had been unstable before it went off completely.
Moments later, staff members noticed a strong burning smell from the electrical wiring, followed by smoke spreading across the department.
Hospital staff members instructed patients and workers to evacuate, while those undergoing treatment were transferred to other units for continued care.
No casualties were recorded, but smoke lingered around the affected area for several hours, forcing authorities to temporarily suspend operations in the oncology department.
Investigations have begun to determine the exact cause. Hospital management confirmed no injuries or deaths resulted from the incident.
