Oyo State has shut down schools in four local government areas after gunmen abducted a principal and several students in Oriire LGA on Friday morning.

The attack happened between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. at Community High School and LA School in Ahoro-Esinle, according to the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board. One teacher was killed during the raid.

OYOSUBEB ordered all primary schools in Oriire, Surulere, Oyo East, and Olorunsogo LGAs to close immediately and remain shut until further notice.

Executive Chairman Nureni Adeniran said the exact number of abducted pupils is still unclear as security agencies comb the area.

“This is a dark and painful moment for our education family in Oyo State,” Adeniran said. “The safety of our children remains our utmost priority.”

He said a tactical response team has been deployed under the coordination of the state police commissioner. Intelligence and rescue operations are ongoing to secure the release of the abducted students and restore calm.

The closures are a precaution to prevent further attacks while security stabilizes the area.
