Oyo schools shut: Teachers begin indefinite strike as abducted pupils, colleagues remain in captivity

● NUT: “Fear and anxiety” too high since May 15 Ogbomoso kidnappings. “No classes until they are free”

All public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State downed tools Monday as the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, launched an indefinite strike over the abduction of teachers and pupils near Ogbomoso.

The strike began June 1, 2026, after a directive issued by NUT Sunday night.

Gunmen struck on May 15 at 3 schools in Oriire LGA: Community Grammar School Ahoro-Esinele, L.A. Primary School Ahoro-Esinele, and Baptist Nursery & Primary School Yawota.

Teachers and students were taken that day. Two weeks later, NUT says there’s still “uncertainty” around their rescue and safe release.

In its statement, NUT said the prolonged detention has created “fear and anxiety” among members and discouraged parents from sending children to school.

“The situation has heightened tension across affected communities and raised concerns over the safety of teachers and learners,” the union stated.

NUT ordered all public school teachers statewide to withdraw services “until further notice.” Members were told to stay law-abiding and remain at home for safety.

The strike, NUT said, is to force government authorities to “intensify efforts” towards securing the abductees’ release.

The union also reaffirmed solidarity with the victims and their families.

With schools shut indefinitely, thousands of Oyo pupils are now out of class. The union vowed lawful engagement with government will continue “until the victims regained their freedom.”

The action also comes amid APC’s clash with Gov Makinde over Oyo insecurity.
