Former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Rowland Owie, has congratulated former President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, on his 83rd birthday.

In a statement on Saturday, Senator Owie expressed his admiration, saying, “It is with great respect and heartfelt congratulations that I celebrate our former President, General Ibrahim Babangida, as he marks his 83rd birthday.”

“General Babangida’s leadership during a pivotal period in Nigeria’s history set the stage for transformative changes across various sectors. His foresight and bold decisions, particularly in laying the foundation for Nigeria’s transition to a market economy, continue to shape our nation’s development. His adoption of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), though debated, demonstrated his commitment to steering the Nigerian economy towards sustainable growth. The infrastructure projects initiated under his leadership, including the iconic Third Mainland Bridge and the dualization of major highways, stand as lasting testaments to his dedication to Nigeria’s progress.

“Beyond economic reforms, General Babangida’s contributions to Nigeria’s social and political landscapes are undeniable. His mass mobilization initiative, MAMSER, and the establishment of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) underscored his deep understanding of civic responsibility and public safety. Moreover, his strategic political reforms, including the creation of new states and the relocation of the nation’s capital to Abuja, reflected his vision for a united and forward-looking Nigeria.
