The Osun State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly posting a fake video on Facebook claiming that bandits had invaded the state, a post that triggered panic among residents.

In a statement Friday, Police Public Relations Officer Abiodun Ojelabi said the suspect uploaded the video on Monday alleging a bandit attack in Osun.

The footage quickly spread online, causing fear in several communities.

“Upon investigation, it was discovered that the video did not depict a bandit attack,” Ojelabi stated. “The footage actually showed members of the public restraining a person with a mental health condition.”

The suspect was arrested on Wednesday for disseminating misleading content, an offence punishable under the Cybercrimes Act, 2015 and other relevant laws. Ojelabi said the man was later released following appeals from his elderly parents.

He has since issued a public apology and received a stern warning against repeating the act.

Osun Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan urged residents to verify information before sharing it. “Digital platforms must not be used to spread falsehoods capable of causing fear, panic, or disrupting public order,” he warned.

Security agencies have repeatedly cautioned against the spread of fake news, especially around banditry and attacks, noting that such posts can trigger unnecessary tension and overstretch emergency responders.
