Chairman, Senate Committee on Interior, Sen. Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, has commended the Federal Government of Nigeria for increasing inmate feeding by 50%.
He said the laudable initiative addressed one of the major concerns of the Committee, to wit: the welfare and rehabilitation of inmates in correctional facilities nationwide.
Sen. Oshiomhole emphasized the importance of keeping prisoners alive and catering to their correctional activities, stating that “a well-fed inmate is more receptive to rehabilitation and reintegration into society.”
He noted that this increase in feeding allowance will significantly impact the lives of inmates, enabling them to maintain good health and focus on their correctional programmes.
The Chairman further highlighted that this initiative aligned with the Committee’s efforts to reform correctional facilities nationwide.
He stated that “with proper feeding and care, inmates will be more likely to participate in vocational training, counseling, and other rehabilitation programs, ultimately becoming better humans and reducing recidivism rates.”
This increase in inmate feeding is a significant step towards improving the conditions in correctional facilities and supporting the rehabilitation of inmates.
The Senate Committee on Interior will continue to work with the federal government to ensure the effective implementation of this initiative and further reforms in the correctional system.
