A viral claim that fintech company OPay would shut down operations indefinitely from September 1, 2026 has been debunked, after the X user who posted it deleted the tweet and issued a public apology.
The user, identified on X as Cute Hafserh @haifah_er_abba, had earlier shared a post alleging that OPay would go on an indefinite break starting September 1.
The post quickly circulated online, sparking panic among users who rely on the platform for transfers, payments, and wallet services.

In a follow-up post on Monday, Hafserh admitted the claim was false and misleading.
“Earlier yesterday I shared a post on my X page about OPay going on an indefinite break starting from 1st September 2026 which had been circulating for days before I shared it on my account @haifah_er_abba,” she wrote.
“I have come to the notice that it was false and misleading information. I have taken down my post. @OPay_NG operations are normal and there is no break or shutdown,” she stated.
“I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and reposting misleading information. Thank you for your understanding.”

The apology came hours after OPay publicly demanded that the user take down the publication, retract the claim, and issue an unreserved apology.
In a statement, the company described the rumour as “false, malicious, libellous and defamatory,” warning that it would pursue legal action if the post was not removed.
OPay also assured customers that all services remain fully operational and that there is no plan for a shutdown or service break.
The incident highlights growing concerns over misinformation on social media, particularly around financial services where false claims can trigger panic withdrawals and disruptions.
With the post now deleted and clarification issued, OPay says it is working with relevant authorities to curb the spread of fake news targeting digital financial platforms.
Customers have been advised to rely only on official OPay channels for updates.
