Okpekpe 10km road race secures global live broadcast for May 30

The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race will be broadcast live worldwide on May 30, organisers announced.

The race, West Africa’s first to receive World Athletics Label status, starts on Apana Road and finishes in Okpekpe. Athletes will run a 10km course of hills and tarred roads. Elite runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Nigeria are expected to compete.

Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenyo holds the men’s record at 28:28, while Kenya-born Kazakhstani Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui holds the women’s record at 32:38, set in 2023.

Organisers said the event’s Gold Label status and prize money continue to draw international fields. Media and Activation Director Dare Esan said the race “continues to showcase Nigeria’s capacity to host world-class events” since gaining a fixture on the global calendar in 2015.

The race has also boosted tourism and investment in Okpekpe, known for its hilltop scenery and agriculture.
