Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has pledged to investigate and expose alleged mismanagement by his predecessor, former Governor Godwin Obaseki, and the factional Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo accused the former administration of failing to embrace its new role as an opposition party and leaving a legacy of resource mismanagement, weakened traditional institutions, and alleged favoritism benefiting a select few at the expense of the public.
Since his inauguration two weeks ago, Governor Okpebholo has taken swift action to address key challenges in the state. His administration has banned the activities of touts in markets—allegedly sanctioned under the previous government—and implemented measures to resolve long-standing cult clashes in Benin City.
Additionally, illegal revenue collection has been halted, and the state’s first flyover bridge project has been launched, signaling a strong focus on infrastructure development.
The Okpebholo administration has also committed to unveiling and addressing alleged financial irregularities linked to the Obaseki-led government.
Among these are claims that nearly 500 government-owned vehicles were improperly allocated to associates of the former governor.
Governor Okpebholo’s team has emphasized its determination to recover public assets and hold those responsible accountable.
Responding to criticism from the PDP, Itua described their remarks as baseless attempts at blackmail, urging Edo residents to remain patient as the new administration rolls out its reform agenda.
Governor Okpebholo’s proactive approach has heightened public expectations for transparency, accountability, and rapid development, while also intensifying scrutiny of the former administration’s record.
