Governor Obaseki commended the Federal Government for choosing to establish these hospitals in Edo State.

He assured that his administration would collaborate with the federal government to ensure the swift realization of the proposed hospital projects, thereby providing high-quality healthcare services to the people of the State.

Expressing his gratitude, Governor Obaseki stated, “I would like to express my gratitude to the federal government, particularly the former Minister for Health and the former President, for this generous initiative and gesture towards the people of Edo State. I am confident that history and posterity will remember them for this kind act. I also extend my congratulations to Professor Adeoye and Professor Ogbemudia on their appointments as Acting Medical Directors of the National Fistula Hospital, Benin, and the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Benin, respectively.”

The governor further elaborated on the State’s healthcare approach, emphasizing its integration and coordination across different healthcare sectors.

He mentioned the establishment of a centralized healthcare record system that facilitates referrals to institutions like the National Fistula Hospital and the National Orthopaedic Hospital. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of the Edo State Health Insurance Programme, which would provide a financing arrangement for individuals to afford the services offered by these specialized hospitals.

He outlined the State’s plans for a comprehensive medical city, encompassing various specialties such as orthopaedics, fistula treatment, cancer care, and pediatrics.

He suggested the possibility of co-locating these facilities to foster collaboration and efficient healthcare delivery.

Alternatively, he mentioned providing land infrastructure for the standalone construction of the hospitals, although he noted that it may not be the optimal approach as it would lack integration with existing medical facilities.

Nevertheless, the government pledged to assist in providing the necessary land for the hospitals’ establishment.
Governor Obaseki expressed the readiness of the Edo State Government to collaborate closely with the federal government to ensure a smooth and prompt commencement of operations for both institutions.

He looked forward to the Acting Medical Directors working with the Ministry of Health to develop a startup plan in the coming weeks.
