In what is seen as the greatest honour yet to have come forth from the ancient Benin Kingdom and from the Palace of the Omo N’Oba, Oba Ewuare II has ordered the postponement of his fifth coronation anniversary in honour of the late billionaire business mogul and philanthropist, Captain (Dr)Idahosa Wells Okunbo, JP.
Popularly referred to as Captain ‘Hosa, he defined his life and times with the magnitude of his eleemosynary acts, charitable works and service to humanity and God.
He died from pancreatic cancer on Sunday, August 8, 2021 and was buried on Friday, October 8, 2021, in his Mausoleum on his iconic multibillion naira Wells Hosa Greenhouse Farm, one of the best in West Africa.
The directive by the Oba Ewuare II was contained in a public announcement by the “Oba Palace”, dated October 11, 2021 and signed by the Secretary of the Benin Tradutional Council, BTC, Frank Irabor.
Read it: “The Benin Traditional Council, on behalf of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, wishes to inform the general (sic) public that as a result of the demise of Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbo, and his burial few days ago, His Royal Majesty has directed that all the events lined up to mark the fifth coronation anniversary celebration of His Royal Majesty on 39th October, 2021 should be postponed in honour of the late Captain Hosa Wells Okunbo, whonwas am illustrious son of Edo State in whom we were well pleased.
“May his gentle soul continue to rest in peace.
“Oba ghato ‘kpere, Ise.”
While alive, Captain ‘Hosa Okunbo enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the Benin Palace.
He was recognised with the honour of an Ambassador of the Benin Kingdom by Omo N’Oba Erediauwa before he went to join his ancestors.
Captain ‘Hosa Okunbo was a bosom friend of Oba Ewuare II. They had been friends before Oba Ewuare II ascended to the throne of his forefathers five years ago.
