Journalists in the Federal Capital Territory received free medical consultations and screenings on Saturday as the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, partnered with Nizamiye Hospital for a medical outreach to kick off its 2026 Press Week.

Held in Abuja, the outreach focused on the health of media practitioners who often work under intense pressure. NUJ FCT Council Chairman Comrade Grace Ike said journalists frequently neglect their wellbeing while serving the public, and stressed that “a healthy journalist is better equipped to serve society with excellence.”

She added that participants diagnosed with serious conditions would be referred for further treatment.

The outreach opened the week-long programme themed _“2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation.”_ Ike urged journalists nationwide to uphold ethical standards and counter fake news ahead of the 2027 polls, warning that misinformation threatens democracy and stability.
