The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu has called for a shift in Nigerian journalism toward a more developmental and unifying role to foster national progress.

According to Head, Press and Public Relations of PSC Ikechukwu Ani, speaking at the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Owerri, Argungu emphasized the need to abandon “guerrilla journalism” — a term he used to describe sensational and negative reporting — in favor of constructive, solution-driven journalism.

“The pen should be wielded as an instrument for national unity and development, rather than for amplifying negative energies,” Argungu said in a goodwill message delivered on his behalf by Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations at the PSC.

He urged journalists to collaborate with both government and the public in building a prosperous and egalitarian society, noting that the media’s role as a watchdog is essential in providing checks and balances in Nigeria’s democracy.

“You must enjoy the freedom to carry out this critical national assignment, but like Caesar’s wife, you must also remain above suspicion,” Argungu added, stressing the importance of ethical conduct in journalism.

The PSC Chairman also highlighted the government’s commitment to press freedom, stating that journalists operate without interference under the current administration. He called on media professionals to reciprocate by adhering to ethical standards and contributing to national stability.

Argungu commended the outgoing NUJ President, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, for his leadership and the visibility he has brought to the union. He expressed optimism that the conference would produce new leaders who would build on these achievements.

“The Police Service Commission holds Nigerian journalists in high esteem and remains committed to supporting efforts that uphold press independence and professionalism,” Argungu concluded.

The conference, which brought together delegates from across the country, aims to elect new leadership and chart a path for the future of journalism in Nigeria.
