The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’s SIS) has dismantled illegal refineries in Obiapu forest, Ukwa West, Abia State.

These refineries were allegedly involved in illegal petroleum dealings, sabotaging the nation’s economy, according to NSCDC spokesman Babawale Afolabi.

In a statement on Tuesday, Afolabi said that CG SIS Commander, Deputy Commandant Appolos Dandaura, informed journalists that four suspects, part of a notorious syndicate, were arrested.

They were operating multiple artisanal oil refineries in the dense forest.

The suspects, Oluchi Ibuh (39, Anambra State), Michael Isaac (31, Edo State), Chioma Osioma (32, Imo State), and Ebere Chike (32, Anambra State), were caught with stolen crude oil, locally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and various instruments used in their operations.

The squad dismantled several illegal connections to oil pipelines used for siphoning crude oil. At the crime scene, authorities found galvanized pipes, industrial hoses, large quantities of stolen crude oil, fabricated tanks, cooking pots, pit reservoirs, calibrated plastic tanks, and cellophane bags used for packaging. Unquantifiable liters of illegally refined AGO, metal buckets, and shovels were also seized.

The suspects are assisting in the investigation and will be charged in court.
