NNPC Limited has delivered a major facelift to the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, commissioning and handing over three fully rehabilitated 100-bed wards as part of its corporate social responsibility drive.
The upgrade, executed by NNPC Foundation, covered Wards G, H, and J. Each ward got new roofs and ceilings, electrical and mechanical system overhauls, new vinyl floors, fresh beds, and a central medical gas system to boost patient care.
Before the intervention, the wards were in such poor shape that bed space was limited and in-patient capacity suffered, hospital officials said.
Speaking at Tuesday’s handover, NNPC Group CEO Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari said profitability for the company goes beyond production and revenue. “It embraces the level of social impact the company makes,” said Ojulari, represented by Chief Financial Officer Adedapo Segun.
NNPC Foundation Managing Director Emmanuella Arukwe said the project strengthens a hospital that has served Nigerians for decades. “Our focus remains on practical interventions that improve lives and align with national priorities in healthcare,” she noted.
Medical Director Dr. Wakeel Lawal said the hospital reached out to NNPC Foundation because the wards were in dire condition. He thanked NNPC for bringing them to “international standards.”
“What NNPC Limited has done goes beyond rehabilitation. It represents a renewal of hope,” Lawal said.
The event was attended by NNPC EVP Business Services Sophia Mbakwe. The CFO commissioned the wards and unveiled a plaque alongside Dr. Lawal and H.R.H. Alhaji Rodiyallahu Alabi Yunusa, Baale of Bajulaiye, who represented the Oba of Somolu.
The three wards add 300 beds back into service at Igbobi, one of Nigeria’s key referral centres for orthopedic care.
