NIS warns Nigerians against misusing U.S. visas

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has cautioned Nigerian citizens to use their U.S. visas strictly in line with the purpose stated during their application.

This caution followed growing concerns from the United States government over visa misuse.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, emphasised that U.S. visa holders must comply with the terms and conditions under which their visas were granted.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to inform the general public of concerns raised by the United States Government regarding the misuse of U.S. visas by Nigerians. All visa holders are advised to strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications,” the statement read.

Akinlabi warned that violations such as overstaying, unauthorised activities, or breaching immigration laws could lead to visa revocation, deportation, and permanent ineligibility for future travel to the U.S.

He also advised Nigerian students in the United States to remain enrolled in active study programmes, cautioning that withdrawal, prolonged absence, or unauthorised work could result in the cancellation of their visas.

The statement further noted that U.S. consular officers were within their rights to deny tourist visas to applicants suspected of intending to give birth in the U.S. as a means to secure citizenship for their children.

Reaffirming ongoing cooperation with the U.S. Mission in Abuja, the NIS said it was committed to ensuring Nigeria was not placed under any future visa restrictions.

“We call on all Nigerians to comply fully with U.S. visa regulations.

“Responsible conduct is essential to preserving access to legitimate travel opportunities,” the NIS said.
