The Nigerian Youth Vanguard has expressed support for the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin in the aftermath of the overheating of the University Administration on account of school fees.
President of the Nigerian Youth Vanguard, Mr Osaro Benedict, in a statement, condemned the hijack of the stufents’ protest by purported hawks who were angry with the financial responsibility, accountability and probity the Vice Chancellor had brought to the administration of the University.
Read the statement, entitled: “When You Fight Corruption, Corruption will Fight Back”: “We are not unaware of the nocturnal meetings being organized to discredit the Office and the Person of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Imuetinyan Salami, under the smokescreen of a school fees issue .
“Professor Imuetinyan Salami should be commended for her giant strides and accounting responsibility since her taking over of the administration of the School.
“We call on the students to focus on their studies and cease being agents of destabilisation.
“We are also inundated by complaints bordering on the behavior of these sets of students, who are very arrogant and whose nuances as to respect to constituted authorities leave much to be desired.
“We stand with Professor Salami against the ploy to discredit her on this issue and reiterate that she has sanitized the bazaar-like structure on financial issues the university had before her ascension to Office, where it was reported that about One billion Naira was squandered weekly on frivolities by those in the helms of affairs, before her ascension to Office.
“It is the desire to bring back those old days that is fueling these happenings and as advocates of probity and accountability, we stand with Professor against the agents of destabilisation.”
