The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step towards protecting children from sexual abuse by approving a bill that prescribes life imprisonment for anyone convicted of defiling a minor.

The bill, which aims to amend the Criminal Code Act, also increases the penalty for rape to a minimum of 10 years in prison.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasised the severity of the crime, stating, “Defilement is even more serious than rape. Any defilement of a minor in Nigeria henceforth attracts life imprisonment.”

The bill, which originated from the House of Representatives, seeks to overhaul several provisions of the nation’s criminal code to address contemporary realities.
