Security operatives disperse protesters, journalists with gunshots in Abuja

Security operatives, on Saturday, August 3, 2024, shoot at #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters and journalists at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The protesters had converged on the stadium in continuation of the 10-day nationwide protest against economic hardship.

The protest on its third day on Saturday commenced on August 1.

Security operatives who were stationed at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium dispersed protesters and journalists from the facility with gunshots.

The masked security agents suspected to be officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) shot sporadically at the protesters.

Following the shooting, the protesters scamper for safety inside bushes around the stadium with some of the security operatives giving the demonstrators a hot chase.

The remaining operatives on the ground came for the journalists who were at a separate spot covering the protest.

As they approached, journalists fled, scrambling into any available vehicle.

The masked security operatives, therefore, fired sporadically at the fleeing journalists.

Bullets pierced a Premium Times reporter’s car conveying journalists out of the location at three different locations. A commuter vehicle’s glass was also shattered with bullets.

Police officers had, on Friday, dispersed protesters around the Berger Bridge in the nation’s capital.

The protesters were chanting ‘Hunger dey o’, meaning there’s hunger, before the policemen dispersed them forcefully, including using tear gas.
