The Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan has confirmed the release of Fr. Nathaniel Asuwaye, parish priest of Holy Trinity Church in Karku, Kaura County, after three months in captivity.

In a statement on May 12, the diocese said Asuwaye was safe, in stable condition, and receiving medical care. “His condition is stable, he is in good spirits, and he thanks you for your prayers and support,” the statement read.

Asuwaye was abducted in the early hours of Feb. 7 when armed attackers stormed the rectory in Kaduna State. During the assault, 10 parishioners were also kidnapped and at least three people were killed.

The diocese said it had urged continuous prayers for his release, dedicating May to fervent prayer during Marian devotions and Mass.

“God, who does not abandon those who bear His name and call upon Him, has heard our prayers and granted Father Nathaniel’s safe return,” the statement said.

Bishop Julius Yakubu Kundi thanked those who supported the Church, including those who cared for Asuwaye’s family and stood with the community through prayer and solidarity.

The diocese gave no update on the 10 parishioners abducted alongside the priest.

The release comes amid ongoing concern over attacks on clergy and widespread insecurity in parts of Nigeria. According to Fides News Agency, at least two other Catholic priests remain in captivity: Fr. Joseph Igweagu of Aguleri Diocese, abducted Oct. 12, 2022, and Fr. Emmanuel Ezema of Zaria Diocese, taken Dec. 2, 2025.

The Catholic Church in Nigeria has repeatedly called for stronger security measures to protect lives and restore peace in communities affected by violence. [Adapted/culled from Vatican News]
