Nigeria’s diplomatic community is mourning Mohammed Mahmud Lele, a career envoy who died in Ankara, Türkiye, on April 19, 2026, in a prolonged illness. He was 50.
Lele served as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Weeks before his death, President Bola Tinubu nominated him as Ambassador-designate to Algeria. The Senate confirmed the appointment.
Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, Lele graduated in Economics from Bayero University Kano and joined the Foreign Service in 2001. He served in Nigeria’s missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh, earning a reputation for diligence and professionalism.

Colleagues described him as a thoughtful strategist who shaped Nigeria’s engagement with the Middle East.
Permanent Secretary Dunoma Umar Ahmed led senior officials to receive his remains at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. He called Lele “a humble and dedicated officer whose legacy will endure within the service.”
Lele was buried on April 22 in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Ministry extended condolences to his family, associates, and the government and people of Bauchi State, and offered prayers for the repose of his soul.
