The National Emergency Management Agency and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency are stepping up collaboration to improve flood early warning and preparedness across Nigeria ahead of the 2026 rainy season.
NEMA Director General Mrs. Zubaida Umar visited NIHSA headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, 7 May 2026, to push for closer inter-agency coordination on hydrological forecasts, early warning dissemination, and climate-induced disaster tracking.

Mrs. Umar said stronger technical engagement through a strategic flood early warning platform would support anticipatory action and reduce the impact of flooding in vulnerable communities.
“Enhanced synergy between NEMA and NIHSA would significantly strengthen national efforts toward promoting risk-informed flood preparedness, improving coordinated response planning, and building resilient communities,” she said.
She noted that NEMA has been engaging stakeholders at national and sub-national levels since the release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook to drive early mitigation measures in flood-prone areas.
NIHSA Director General Mr. Umar Ibrahim Mohammed welcomed the visit and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to providing timely hydrological data and technical support for flood forecasting and early warning.
