The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has unveiled a state-of-the-art naval facility in Bayelsa State, aimed at enhancing maritime security in the region.
The facility, located in Ayakoro Community, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, is equipped with modern infrastructure, including a fully furnished administrative block, accommodation block, two units of gun boats, and an operational floating jetty.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku said the project was a testament to the Commission’s commitment to advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He emphasised that the facility would play a crucial role in curbing criminal activities in the region, such as kidnapping and illegal oil activities, thereby enhancing the overall security of the Niger Delta.
“The President’s strategic investment in security has yielded tangible results — crude oil production has risen from one million barrels per day to 2.2 million barrels per day.
“This is also one of these points because this specific location was chosen by the Nigerian Navy due to its strategic position. From this junction, a creek extends towards Southern Ijaw, leading directly to Sangana. If this place had not been blocked in the past, kidnappers and those involved in illegal oil activities and artisanal refining would have used it to move their products, evacuating them through Onuembu.
“So this facility here helps prevent such criminal activities in the area. It also stops those intending to commit crimes in Yenagoa, such as kidnapping, by blocking their escape route. With this facility in place, they have no choice but to be deterred, and it also protects the entire stretch of this river.”
The Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri represented by Brig-Gen. Eric Angaye (retd) commended the NDDC for its developmental projects across the state.
He urged communities in the Niger Delta to collaborate with security agencies to protect economic assets and investments, stressing the importance of collective efforts in maintaining regional security.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, represented by the Commander of the Joint Task Force Operations Delta Safe, Rear Admiral Noel Madugu, expressed gratitude to the NDDC for constructing the naval facility.
He noted that the facility will significantly improve naval operations in the area, enabling the Nigerian Navy to effectively combat security challenges in the region.
Chief Clever Apkoti, speaking on behalf of the Ayakoro Community and its council of chiefs, thanked Dr. Ogbuku for the developmental milestone in their community, describing the project as a demonstration of his visionary leadership.
He expressed optimism that the facility will bring about improved security and economic opportunities for the people of Ayakoro and the wider Niger Delta region.
