The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called on the media to adopt a constructive framing approach in reporting the telecom industry.
According to Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, Head of Public Affairs at NCC, this approach involves presenting industry data and challenges in a way that highlights progress, showcases solutions, and recognizes improvements in quality of service and experience.
Speaking at the presentation of the commission’s Quarterly Industry Network Performance Reports, Ukoha emphasised the importance of providing context to industry data to prevent misinterpretation and ensure accuracy.
She noted that the quarterly performance reports provide rich material for media coverage, including data-driven investigative reporting and sector monitoring dashboards.
The reports presented highlighted overall improvements in network performance, but also noted gaps between rural and urban areas, as well as unsteady service along some roads.
Additionally, the reports showed that some telecom providers are outperforming others in terms of service quality.
The NCC’s objective in presenting the quarterly reports is to deepen media understanding of the commission’s performance data and equip them with practical insights on how to integrate the findings into their reporting.
By doing so, the NCC aims to enhance the quality of information reaching the public and promote a more informed discourse on the telecom industry.
The media plays a critical role in shaping public perception of the telecom industry. By adopting a constructive framing approach, media practitioners can help highlight the industry’s progress and challenges, while also promoting transparency and accountability.
