The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) with support from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), on Wednesday, launched the Judicial Research Center in Abuja.
The Research Center was funded by the United States Department of States/International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau (INL).
The main objective of the Judicial Resource Center is to add impetus to legal research and to enable NAPTIP prosecutors and potential researchers to compare and to cite cases relative to present-day matters.
The Director General in her opening remarks, welcomed everyone and also thanked the sponsors of the project.
She said: “it is apparent that there is an upsurge in the number of cases of human trafficking in Courts all over the Federation which brings with it the attendant issues of Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants.
“It is my belief that this Judicial Resource Center would define our roles as actors in the fight against trafficking in Persons and further deepen the already existing partnership between the Agencies, UNODC and INL to fulfill our mandates.”
The UNODC representative to Nigeria Mr Oliver Stolpe said he was excited to always work with NAPTIP and the fight against TIP was a very important one.
He said “continuous training and capacity building are essential for NAPTIP’s officials to be equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to investigate and prosecute trafficking in persons cases.”
